Historic Longview Farmers Market Reopens for FY 2013!

Posted: Tue, Mar 26, 2013
By: Danielle Heard, MS, HHC

Spring is here and it is time to get back to shopping at our wonderful local farmers markets! Knowing where your food comes from and how it is grown is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. By shopping at your local farmers markets, you can buy nutrient dense whole foods grown with care that are freshly harvested, higher in antioxidants, are non-irradiated and that often costs less than what you might find in a supermarket. It also enables you to develop relationships directly with the people who are growing and raising your food, and helps to grow your local economy — something every city needs!

When shopping at local farmers markets, make sure to ask the farmers lots of questions to confirm they are growing sustainably without harmful chemicals and pesticides, and that they are pasture raising animals humanely without GMO feed. Just because products are grown or raised locally, does not always mean that it was grown with organic practices or humanely.

Don't be afraid to ask questions and to even walk away from nice sweet farmers who are not growing sustainably or who cannot confirm the way they are growing what they are selling. With practice, you will be able to identify who is growing with organic practices and those who are not. If you ask a farmer if they feeding their chickens GMO seeds and they can't answer the question,

Americans Die Younger Than Peers - Fixing A Broken Healthcare System

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was developed to help provide affordable healthcare to millions of Americans who currently don't have it and to also address various unethical business practices by the healthcare and insurance companies. But will providing the existing level of medical care to more people address the skyrocketing rates of disease and lead to better medical care and a healthier society? Leading Integrative Medicine doctor, Andrew Weil, MD says, NO! "The present system doesn't work, and it is going to take us down. We need a whole new kind of medicine," says Dr. Weil, who is the founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.

On Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET on CNN the new movie documentary "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare," will air. The focus of the documentary is on America's low rankings in health among peer countries, the causes of poor health, the problems with the US medical system and some solutions.

According to new research released by the National Academy of Sciences in January 2013, Americans live shorter lives and are in poorer health than other high-income countries. Out of 17 high-income economic peer countries, American men rank

Humane Lobby Day 2013 - Give a Voice to Animals!

Many of you are as concerned as I am about the rights of animals and their treatment. Meeting with your state legislators is one of the best ways to let your representatives know about your concerns and the need for legislative changes. Certainly calling and writing letters are also very effective, but meeting with legislators in person can have a far greater impact and can give a voice to animals who can't speak for themselves.

To create change it takes the support of many people. This is why I hope that you will consider attending one of the Humane Lobby Day events this year that is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. If you live in Texas, the Humane Lobby Day event will be held on March 14, 2013 in Austin, Texas. To find out more information

Overcoming Type 2 Diabetes with Diet

On August 16, 2012, I received an email from a woman who I had worked with two years ago. She said, “Wow...what can I say. Things have really spun out of control for me. I just received the call from my doctor saying I have Type 2 Diabetes. I have felt like crap after those last two rounds of Prednisone. Now this!”

This news from my former client was very surprising. She had experienced a lot of success in my health program. She had lost weight and had identified many of the foods that were triggering food allergies which caused severe respiratory, body pain and skin reactions. She had been doing so well that she had entered into a master’s degree program to work towards her professional dream. She had no prior history of blood sugar issues or had ever been diagnosed with diabetes.

Upon viewing her blood test results, her doctor wrote a prescription for insulin and sent her to diabetes educators for training. Throughout her appointments, these health care providers all informed her that she would need to take insulin for the rest of her life. Naturally, she was extremely devastated by this news and felt hopeless. She contacted me immediately and requested an appointment that same day.

During our meeting we discussed the impact Prednisone can have on a person’s health and that it can cause (Read Full Article)

The Story Behind the Name Artemis in the City

People often ask me about the name of my company and why I chose Artemis. About 10 years ago I worked for someone who told me that a company name should reflect something personal and meaningful to you. At the time, he had a company which he had named Go Fat Free because he said he was always on a diet.

So when I began thinking of names for my company, I went through a long list of words trying to fit them together into a perfect name that would also be meaningful and convey the mission of my business.

I have always loved and related to the Greek goddess Artemis. I own various paintings and statues of Artemis and while living in New York City had an email address for myself which was Artemisinthecity@. After days of racking my brain for the perfect company name, and adamant that I did not want a company name with the word Wellness in it like thousands of others, my mother said, “I like Artemis in the City.”

At first I thought my mother was joking and I didn’t really take it very seriously. But then I thought about what my former boss and friend had said about company names. So I began working with the name and realized its great potential and symbolism and that it also represented something personal to me.

As I began visioning my company’s brand identity and logo, I knew that I wanted to create an icon that was memorable. The Greek goddess Artemis became my icon for my company. In Greek mythology, Artemis represents (Read Full Article)

Many people around the world suffer from chronic pain and fatigue known as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Both men and women afflicted are prescribed many various anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, and pain medications but nothing really helps them regain their health and the medications often cause additional serious health problems. These people will often tell their friends, family and other members of online support groups that they are praying for a cure - a miracle drug - that will heal all that ails them.

There are many reasons why a person can be experiencing chronic pain and fatigue. These conditions usually are caused by a combination of many health, nutrition and lifestyle issues that is very complex which conventional methods of treatment do not know how to address. This is a bit late, hope you enjoy! It's been a very busy year developing and teaching the new "Food for the Untamed Soul" workshop series! Sorry for the delay!

In February 2012, Danielle Heard, MS, HHC, Founder of Artemis in the City, was interviewed as part of a series of news stories on the health benefits of organic foods.

On Sunday, February 26, 2012, the Longview News-Journal featured the first article of the series in the Lifestyle section of the newspaper titled "Going Organic - East Texans tout health benefits of organic food." The feature article was written by editor Charlotte Stewart, and includes interviews with Jerica Cadman and her husband Matthew Cadman, who turned to diet to address Matthew's ulcerative colitis, along with Danielle, who overcame connective tissue disease, fibromyalgia and a host of other chronic health problems by changing her diet. Successfully healing herself forever changed her relationship with food and was the catalyst that inspired Danielle to become a Certified Holistic Health Counselor so that she could help others with similar health problems.

If you would like to read the article on the Longview News-Journal's website please click here or download the newspaper pdfs page 1 and page 2. Note: Danielle does not recommend refined flour products which are featured in this article.

The second article in the series ran on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, in the Longview News-Journal Taste section titled "You Are What You Eat - Eating your way to healthier life." The article continues the interview with Danielle and the Cadmans and also features Danielle making Raw Sunflower Seed Hummus Collard Wraps in her kitchen along with some additional healthy recipes.
