The World's First Breastfeeding Baby Doll Comes to the US

I received an email today from my younger brother who wrote to say that my four-year-old niece is so completely fascinated by her new baby brother that she is even trying to breastfeed her monkey. I then realized that there is a need for The Breast Milk Baby.

Parents are the primary role models for their children. Their behavior is monitored ever so closely by their kids who often at a young age will confess that they want to grow up to be just like their mommy or daddy. Pretending to be parents is part of play that eventually leads to adult behavior so it is only natural for a child who views her mother breastfeeding a younger sibling to try to emulate breastfeeding.

The Breast Milk Baby is a new doll that comes with a halter for the child to wear that has two flowers on it to represent breasts. When the doll is placed near the flowers, sensors embedded in the flowers trigger the doll to make motions and a sucking sound. The doll also cries until it is burped.

The Breast Milk Baby has been well received in Europe and according to Berjuan Toys, a Spanish company that makes the dolls, it has sold millions. Dennis Lewis, the U.S. representative for Berjuan, said, "It is a wonderful, high quality product that mimics one of the world’s most natural mothering abilities. We’ve been asked by millions of U.S. women to offer the doll here and we’ve been graciously embraced by dozens of advocacy groups that endorse the doll.”

But the doll has faced some controversy in the US. The Fox News host Bill O'Reilly stated on his show that the doll was inappropriate for children. There is even a Facebook page for people who support banning the doll, though it only has 257 fans versus The Breast Milk doll fan page which currently has 8,745 fans.

The doll will officially be introduced to the US at the ASD tradeshow in Las Vegas, NV, July 31 - Aug 3.

I had Baby Alive and Baby Brother (that had a penis) dolls to practice feeding and changing diapers when I was growing up. I never had the opportunity to see a mother breastfeed her child. I do believe that a doll like The Breast Milk Baby can help young future mothers learn that breastfeeding is a natural part of motherhood. The doll also helps children, who have nursing mothers, practice nursing their own baby dolls without becoming confused. Children want to be just like their mommy!

“The Breast Milk Baby will revolutionize our nation’s attitudes to good infant health, while letting little girls share in the wonder and magic of motherhood,” says Lewis. I personally think the doll is extremely positive. If you would like to learn more about the doll, please visit the company website

World Breastfeeding Week started today and will run through August 7th. The Big Latch On event is this Saturday, August 6th. Please support mothers who are breastfeeding, and help to create more awareness about the importance of breastfeeding for optimal health of babies and women.
